Saya Fit Guide & FAQ
Every Sayabi saya is shaped for a specific class of knife. Use this page to match your blade to the right size before you order — and to see what we mean by friction fit.
What is a saya?
A saya (鞘) is the traditional Japanese sheath for a kitchen knife. For centuries they were carved from magnolia wood, fitted to a single blade so precisely that friction alone held the knife — no straps, no clasps. Western cooks usually meet the same idea as an “edge guard” or “knife sheath”: a cover that protects the cutting edge (and your hands) in a knife roll, a drawer, or a bag.
A Sayabi saya is the modern version of that object: a durable ABS shell, sized to a class of blade rather than carved to a single one, with the same friction-fit principle inside and a 3D-textured UV print outside. It is the only textured, customisable saya on the market — designed, printed, and finished in the UK.
How friction fit works
01 Slide
The blade enters between two moulded contact lips that flex out by a fraction of a millimetre.
02 Hold
Spring tension in the ABS shell grips the spine and bevel — not the edge. Inverted, the sheath stays on.
03 Release
One pull releases. No buttons, no straps, no rattle on a moving station.
Size & clearance
Match by blade length and height (spine to edge) — limits vary by size. Measure the blade only, not the handle.
| Size | Max blade length | Max blade height | Typical knives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (16 cm) | Up to 150 mm | Up to 28 mm | Paring, petty, utility |
| Medium (22 cm) | Up to 200 mm | Up to 45 mm | Santoku, nakiri, 8" chef |
| Large (27 cm) | Up to 255 mm | Up to 50 mm | Long gyuto, slicer, 10" chef |
Frequently asked
- What is a saya?
- A saya (鞘) is the traditional Japanese sheath for a kitchen knife — historically carved from magnolia wood and friction-fitted to a single blade. A Sayabi saya is the modern equivalent: a durable ABS shell with the same friction-fit principle, finished with 3D-textured UV printing. It does the job of an edge guard or knife sheath, sized to your knife class.
- How long until my Saya ships?
- Every Saya is UV-printed and finished to order. Dispatch is 3–5 business days from purchase, and UK delivery is free. Bundles ship as a single set.
- What blades fit?
- Each size is built for a friction fit around standard Japanese and Western blade profiles in that length range. The clearance table above lists the maximum blade length and height per size — check both before you order.
- Will it scratch my blade?
- No. The contact faces are smooth ABS — far softer than blade steel — and the friction grip holds the spine and bevel without pressing on the cutting edge. Wipe the inside clean before sheathing so trapped grit never gets a chance.
- Is the UV print durable?
- Yes. UV-cured ink is bonded into a textured relief, not a sticker or laminate. It resists oil, water, and the scuffs of an apron pocket. Care: hand-wipe with a damp cloth. Do not soak.
- Can I return a custom Saya?
- Standard designs can be returned within 14 days unused. Custom Sayas (initials or restaurant logo) are made to your specification and are non-returnable unless they arrive defective. See Returns & Refunds for the full policy.
- Where are they made?
- Every Saya is designed, UV-printed, and finished in the UK on a durable ABS shell. UK delivery is free; international shipping is rolling out — email us for a quote outside the UK.
