What is a saya?
A saya (鞘) is the traditional Japanese sheath for a kitchen knife — historically carved from magnolia wood and friction-fitted to a single blade. Western cooks know the same object as a knife guard, edge guard, or knife sheath: a cover that protects the cutting edge, and your hands, in a knife roll, a drawer, or a bag. A Sayabi saya is the modern version — a durable ABS shell, sized to a class of blade, with the same friction-fit principle inside and a 3D-textured UV print outside.
What makes Sayabi different
Most knife guards are plain plastic. Handmade wood and leather sayas are beautiful but expensive and fixed to one design. Sayabi sits between the two: the protection and price of a moulded guard, with the texture and personalisation of bespoke work. Every saya is UV-printed to order — so the standard collection runs to 12 designs, and a custom saya can carry your restaurant's logo or a chef's initials. The print is a raised, 3D-textured relief in UV-cured ink, not a sticker or a laminate.
Who it's for
Professional chefs protecting their blades in a roll; home cooks who own a knife worth sheathing properly; and anyone buying a memorable, personalised gift for someone who cooks. Restaurants order branded sets for a whole brigade. If you're unsure which size fits your knife, the Fit Guide matches blade length and height to each saya.
How they're made
Sayabi starts with a durable ABS shell, shaped for friction-fit retention. Each design is UV-printed onto the shell as a textured relief and cured under UV light, then hand-checked before dispatch. Designing, printing, and finishing all happen in the United Kingdom, to order — there is no finished stock sitting on a shelf. Dispatch is 3–5 business days, with free UK delivery.
